Themes: Spiritual Awareness

Throughout the novel Lisa struggles with a spiritual gift. First, she often see's a little man that appears before something bad or tragic happens. Second, she has dreams of people in her life or of symbols that warn her of future events or help her deal with the struggles she faces in her life. Third, as the book progresses, she increasingly sees ghosts. Fourth, near the end of the book she begins sleepwalking.
Lisa is often called to by the spirit world to help her with her various problems through a meat offering. Ma-ma-oo describes the spirit world by comparing it to a medicinal plant which is very powerful, but also deadly if you don't know how to handle it. Lisa's grandmother guides her with her gift, however, when Ma-ma-oo passes away Lisa no longer has the guidance she needs to control and understand it, and as Lisa decends into drugs and alcohol, her gift's presence increases.
Lisa's father does not understand her gift at all, her mother has some of the gift but denies it, and her brother is not receptive to her gift.
