Themes: Death and Disfigurement

     While Ma-ma-oo presents an attractive version of the afterlife and spirit world, Lisa encounters many incidents of disfigurement. First, she finds a mutilated dog in the ditch. Second, her father's chickens are mangled by hawks. Third, Lisa is with her father when they find Uncle Mick's body, partially eaten by seals, and disfigured from being in the ocean. Fourth, she also learns of her grandfather's body being retrieved from an overflowing bathtub.
