The novel is structured in four chapters; an important number in native spirituality. The novel is told in first person from Lisa's perspective. The main portion of the novel begins with Lisa waking up not to long after she had found out that her younger brother Jimmy, is lost at sea. The novel ends with Lisa at sea looking for Jimmy.
Throughout the journey she takes in searching for her brother, Lisa reflects on past events leading up to Jimmy's disappearance and other important events that add the the background of her story. Linked into the main narrative is a chain of flashbacks which illustrate exactly why and how Jimmy became lost at sea, Lisa's relationship with her brother, and her relationship with the spirit world. Lisa's flashbacks begin in her childhood and end the day that Jimmy left to sea.
